  17. <p>     In recent years a number of state laws restricting abortion
  18. have been winding through lower-court challenges toward a final
  19. showdown in the Supreme Court. Tracking their progress has been
  20. like witnessing a car crash in slow motion, because any of them
  21. might lead to an explosive ruling that would overturn Roe v.
  22. Wade, the 1973 decision that created abortion rights.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     Last week a federal appeals court set the stage for that
  25. collision when it upheld most of Pennsylvania's law, putting
  26. that statute first in line for possible review by the high
  27. court. The lower court approved provisions of the law requiring
  28. parental consent for minors and a 24-hour waiting period before
  29. abortions, but struck down a provision requiring husbands to
  30. give their consent when their wives seek an abortion. Though the
  31. Justices could uphold the Pennsylvania statute without
  32. overturning Roe, the decision will be closely watched for signs
  33. that the arrival of Clarence Thomas has consolidated a high-court
  34. majority that opposes abortion rights.
